The Birds Are Back!

Our classroom birds are back and I got a few pictures this time...

This is one of the babies, resting , after having some flying lessons...A face only a momma could love.

Singing for his supper.  They are so Cute!

Daddy Cardinal feeding the babies, too. There are 3 babies this batch. Last year, they had 4 at once. They will have two more families, if they do the same as last year.  Momma feeding babies...

It has been really good to watch and talk to the kids about it. The birds are great examples of parents: building a home, Momma sits on the nest and Daddy brings her food, and they both feed the babies and teach them to fly.

We've had such an eye-level view of it all.  None of us ever tire of watching.  And sometimes, like this week, they've gotten our minds off things for a minute and brought us a  little        joy.

  3. Oh, how precious...great pics and chronicles of the growing of the fledglings..love it.
did you know that cardinals come back to the same nest every year and rebuild the old nest to raise the new family.
I had some to build a nest one year just outside my window in front of my computer..
my camera then was not a good one, so no pics.
In a moment of nest hunting, I took it down one fall, and now every year a daddy cardinal flys in there several times and looks up and down that bush looking for his home...I shed tears everytime he shows up...I feel so bad about it...

  4. In self defense, I will say I didn't know they did the migratory yearly nest building in the same place...

  5. Well, I harvested their nest from last year, too, in the fall, because I read that they seldom use the same nest, and ours didn't. They made 3 new nest each time last season, in the same tree. But, I may leave them this year and see what happens next year. I would never want to lose the birds, but I did sell two of the nest under cloches, and kept one for our nature shelf, so the kids could see it up close! Lezlee

I think the little one that you said had a face only a mother could love is just precious.
I have a cardinal that is a constant in my back yard and he likes it when I water my flowers...wants me to spray some water his way.
How blessed your class is to get this experience.

  7. What a wonderful hands on teaching element! I love watching the birds at the feeders--just not flying around the inside of my house thanks to the "not me" crowd at our house! Beautiful pictures!
