Moma had this huge apothecary cabinet, belonging to the old drugstore. You know the kind; ours had the Dr.'s office in back with the Soda Fountain on one side and the watch maker on the other. Against the wall, a bookshelf housed many of my Little Golden Books. Moma bought me plenty, but some I just enjoyed looking through without purchasing.... The floors were laid with octagonal white tiles where dainty round tables with matching bentwood ice cream parlor chairs waited, as the man behind the soda fountain, blinded since the war, expertly made my treat.
Healing Powder... Man, wonder why the Dr. doesn't prescribe more of this stuff!
Remember when the first thing anyone did before they moved into a new place was put down the fly paper in the cabinets? Or is that just a Southern Thing? Well the Green Laws have probably outlawed this stuff, now..
The old cabinet used to be in the dining room growing up. Later, we moved to a smaller place and it was exposed to the weather. Eventually it was all but gone, when Moma saved the porcelain knobs. And part of the dove-tail drawer fronts. Now, they are on my kitchen cabinets... I love the memories they bring, not just of the old drugstore, but also my dining room growing up, where most every Sunday after church, we had fried chicken, right down the road from where I sit, typing. The graphics are wonderful on these old knobs and my kitchen has black counter tops with a lot of red!
So, all those years ago, they had a remedy for asthma~ There are a bunch of knobs, each with interesting stories, but my pics aren't any good, sorry. Some of the other knobs say Sasafras Bark and toothache remedy. I just think they are cool, and others say black or red ink... I've made some things out of the old drawer fronts, too. I might post them at my next party. Do you have something that has an old story to tell from a prior life? You should join my PRIOR LIVES party on the 16th of every month; next one will be May 16th! I would love to see and hear your story!
I am joining a party at Laurie's

I have the glass knobs from my grandparents home... a tornado destroyed most of the home and was going to be tore down so I went through and rescued them. The bedroom they came from was always my favorite to play in.
